About the American Cancer Society
At the American Cancer Society, we're on a mission to free the world from cancer. Until we do, we'll be funding and conducting research, sharing expert information, supporting patients, and spreading the word about prevention. All so you can live longer — and better.
Here are just a few examples of how the American Cancer Society worked toward achieving our mission in Virginia.
Over the last decade we have raised more than $4.1 Million for the American Cancer Society; this is in huge thanks to our corporate sponsors, donors and players. Despite the current worldly climate, we hope to have another fantastic year, continuing to support the Society’s lifesaving work and mission.
COVID 19 has put the American Cancer Society’s mission at risk. We are in danger of losing a generation of progress in research and treatments if we do not act. The pandemic has caused this, by upending lives and plans globally, and by decimating our organization’s fundraising season. Revenue for the year has declined by 1/3, which represents a $200 Million shortfall.
COVID-19 has impacted our work and how ACS will move forward and continue funding our mission thanks to you. We hope you choose to follow along! Each year, we invest $100 million into new research. And, because of the projected budget shortfall, we are at risk of cutting cancer research funding by 50% this year—this would represent our lowest investment in this century. We know that cancer doesn’t stop for a global pandemic. Businesses may close, travel may be restricted and certainly, things we did before March of 2020 will likely never look or feel the same way again. Cancer death rates have not declined because of the pandemic. And we cannot let years of progress and research be undone by the pandemic. Cancer hasn’t stopped and neither will we. You personally know the impact of a cancer diagnosis… and we need you.
